What did Jesus do when things got too much?
Scripture accounts a few times of Jesus withdrawing from heated situations which usually threatened his life (Matt4:12; 12:15; 14:13; etc), and even odd occasions he would find a secluded place to pray or rest with his disciples (Mark 1:35; 6:31; 32; Luke 4:42). It was unannounced and he would simply withdraw and find some quite space. Like in this passage, Jesus withdrew for a little moment and then continued to cross the sea.
13 Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. Mt 14:13-14.
So we find Jesus making space in the thick of his ministry. In Mark 6:31 Jesus actually made a statement to his disciples to “Come away” from the people to a “secluded place and rest a while.” So we notice one thing, and that is the simple fact we need to make the time to rest while we are going about our dealings in life.
